Google completes acquisition of Mandiant

Google has announced in a public statement on its blog yesterday that it has completed the acquisition of Mandiant, considered a leader in cybersecurity incident response, defense, and cloud security.

Mandiant will join Google Cloud “to help organizations improve their threat, incident and exposure management”, according to Thomas Kurian, the CEO of Google Cloud.

The Mandiant name and brand will be retained despite the acquisition, a positive sign for Mandiant employees, now Googlers.

As part of the acquisition, Google Cloud will seek to leverage Mandiant Threat Intelligence, which is a security and intelligence team spread across 22 countries. This service will likely deliver Google Cloud customers incident response, cyber defense and forensic capabilities beyond what Google Cloud can offer today.

Finally, Kurian states that “we will continue to share groundbreaking Mandiant threat research to help support organizations, even for those who don’t run on Google Cloud.”

The completion of this acquisition seeks to give more professional services credibility and expertise in cybersecurity for Google Cloud amidst other cloud service providers. Google Cloud remains the third most popular cloud service provider by revenue and marketshare, with Microsoft Azure in second and Amazon Web Services (AWS) in first.

With Oracle Cloud increasingly becoming more competitive, acquisitions such as Mandiant are vital to maintaining the marketshare Google Cloud possesses today, and helping it grow in the future.
