The alleged hacker of Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 6, and the Uber hack of internal systems, believed to be the same individual, has been arrested in the United Kingdom. The City of London Police announced the arrest on their official Twitter account on September 22, 2022. London Police arrested the 17-year-old in Oxfordshire, in conjunction with the National Cyber Crime Unit (NCCU) investigation.
According to Reuters technology reporter Matthew Keys, the Federal Bureau of Investigation also assisted in the arrest.
The damage of both the Rockstar Games and Uber hacks are still being uncovered. According to Insider Gaming, there is “reasonable degree of certainty” that portions of the Grand Theft Auto 5 source code was also stolen.
Select portions of Grand Theft Auto 5 source code are appearing on forums and Github.
Uber and the FBI believe that the hacker responsible for both cyberattacks is a member of Lapsus$, a loosely organized hacking group with roots in South America and the UK. Lapsus$ has targeted many high-profile companies including Nvidia, Samsung and Microsoft.
London police arrested several Lapsus$ members earlier this year, all who were teenagers, according to The Verge.
Uber is taking no chances in a repeat attack, as it has suspended access to internal systems for many employees as it undergoes an extensive digital forensics audit.
“We will also take this opportunity to continue to strengthen our policies, practices, and technology to further protect Uber against future attacks,” the company said.
