Why the FBI says you need to use encrypted messaging apps Signal, WhatsApp and Messenger
The FBI and CISA are urging Americans to use encrypted communications whenever possible. Here’s why.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating a hack of its own computer network, confirmed to Reuters and CNN. The cyber incident is unknown in nature, and the FBI has made a limited statement to the media.

“The FBI is aware of the incident and is working to gain additional information,” the agency said in an emailed statement to Reuters, without providing further details.

The agency has confirmed to CNN that the incident is at least “contained”, and FBI officials believe it originated at computers located in its New York office. The computers were allegedly used to investigate child sexual exploitation, per Reuters.

It is not exactly clear at this time what day the attack occurred.

The hack of the FBI network in question is not related in any way to the recent data breach of the FBI InfraGard web portal. That cyber incident occurred in December 2022 and is a separate web portal not connected to the FBI network.

The FBI InfraGard is a volunteer force of private industry and critical infrastructure specialists that advise the collective group of cybersecurity threats and expertise.
