Former CISA Director Chris Krebs Warns of 'Significant' Election Security Risks in 2024
Former CISA Director Chris Krebs warns that the United States faces “significant” election security risks in 2024.

Chris Krebs, former director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), warned that the 2024 presidential election is “under attack” from foreign adversaries. “The 2024 race promises to be very, very active threat landscape” in terms of foreign and domestic meddling, believes Krebs, now a partner at the consulting firm Krebs Stamos Group.

In an interview with CyberScoop, Krebs said that Russia, China, and Iran will all likely target the election with disinformation campaigns, hacking attacks, and other forms of interference.

“The threat is real, and it’s only going to get worse,” Krebs said. “We need to be prepared for a full-court press from our adversaries.”

Domestic groups targeting U.S. Presidential Election

Following the widespread narrative that the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election suffered security failures and compromise, Krebs, then a Director at CISA, issued a joint statement attesting to the integrity of the election.

This largely was in response to numerous major media outlets such as Fox News, which has since settled with Dominion Voting Machines for $787.5M, over false voting machine conspiracy theories.

Now, domestic groups—likely made up of the same individuals who believe the 2020 election was “stolen”—may be motivated to interfere with the integrity of the 2024 election, believes Krebs.

Former President Donald Trump who is running in the 2024 Election, likely won’t help matters in this regard.

Krebs “doesn’t even want to think about” what Trump may adopt across his campaign in search for a return to the White House.

Krebs’s warning comes as the United States is facing a growing threat from foreign adversaries. Russia, China, and Iran have all been accused of interfering in previous elections and are likely to do so again in 2024.
