It’s January 1, 2024, and that New Year celebration means many of us will begin to re-evaluate our career trajectory and professional accomplishments. Are we on track with our personal and professional development goals? There’s only one way to find out: conducting a thorough annual career self-audit to ignite your path to professional fulfillment.
Why audit your career? Think of it as a pit stop for your ambition and goals. It’s a chance to:
- Reflect on progress: Did you smash your goals? Did reality ruthlessly crush them? Understanding your wins and stumbles is crucial for course-correcting.
- Identify strengths and weaknesses: What skills propelled you forward? Which ones held you back? Recognizing your power moves and blind spots empowers strategic growth.
- Rekindle passion: Did your initial career fire fizzle out? Reawakening your “why” and aligning it with your current reality reignites motivation.
- Chart a forward course: Armed with self-awareness, you can set SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound) goals that propel you toward a satisfying future.
A Career Development Self-Audit in 3 Steps
So, how do you nail this career self-audit?
Here’s your cheat sheet:
1. Unpack the Past Year:
- Achievements: List your wins, big and small. Did you land that promotion? Master a new skill? Celebrate every step towards your goals.
- Challenges: Be honest about setbacks. Didn’t get the raise you deserved? Missed out on a dream project? Analyze what went wrong and learn from it.
- Skills: What skills did you utilize most effectively? Which ones need polishing? Identifying your skillset paves the way for strategic development.
2. Rekindle the Passion:
- Values: What matters most to you in your career? Purpose, creativity, impact? Clarifying your values aligns your work with your deeper desires. Remember, our employer and even our role aren’t what defines us (although many people make this mistake!). It’s our values that propel us into action and meaningful work.
- Interests: What fuels your professional curiosity? Explore new industries, attend professional conferences and workshops, and connect with inspiring professionals on your social media platform of choice, perhaps. Rekindling your passion steers you towards fulfilling work. Expand your network and learn what others did to achieve what you’re aspiring to. Was it a postgraduate degree? Certification? Intensive training program? Reading several helpful books? Find out what worked and see if it’s replicable for your life and career aspirations.
3. Craft Your Masterplan:
- Goal Setting: Don’t be vague! Set SMART goals for the coming year. Want to lead a project? Master a new software? Break it down into actionable steps. You’re also more likely to complete a goal if you create it while you’re performing the action required to achieve it – i.e., you set a weight loss goal as you’re working out in the gym. We tend to create too difficult or unrealistic goals when we’re in the comfort of our homes.
- Skills Development: Identify the skills crucial for your goals. Invest in courses, training programs, or mentorship to bridge the gap between where you are and where you want to be. Consider reaching out to a colleague in a role you’re trying to land, or someone even from a different company that can offer you constructive feedback.
- Action Plan: Break down your goals into achievable milestones. Schedule dedicated time for progress, track your achievements, and celebrate your wins. While you may create an action plan that is for all of 2024, you’re more likely to reach success by creating measurable, achievable milestones on a quarterly and even monthly basis. Suddenly, the timeline to perform and improve seems immediate instead of an eternity away. Most importantly, hold yourself accountable for your progress in your action plan.
Remember, your career is a journey, not a destination. Regular self-audits are your roadmap, helping you navigate detours, discover hidden paths, and ultimately reach your professional Everest. You’re not always going to succeed on the first try, the second, or maybe even the third. Don’t be afraid to fail, ask for advice, and pivot when it makes sense. There is no shame in realizing 3 months in that your goal needs to be adjusted based on something you can’t control, or a change in priority.
Your Self-Audit is a flexible blueprint, not cemented in stone.
